Booking basics
When are check-in and check-out?
- Check-in is 4 PM and check-out is 10 AM. Beachwalk Vacation Rentals sends the door code and arrival details before your stay.
Is there a minimum stay?
- In peak season (mid-June to mid-August) Sandy Shores books in whole weeks, Saturday-to-Saturday, 7-night stays. The rest of the year shorter stays are available; the booking calendar shows what is open.
How many people can stay, and what are the beds?
- Up to 10 guests in 4 bedrooms: a king master suite on each floor (each with its own bath), a king guest room and a bunk room with two twin-over-twin bunks, which share a Jack-and-Jill bath. 3.5 bathrooms in all.
Are pets allowed?
- No. Sandy Shores is pet-free, which also keeps it comfortable for guests with allergies.
Where do we park?
- There is parking for 5 cars at the house. In band season every car at Beachwalk also needs a resort parking pass (about $5), which comes with your booking.
How do we book?
- Sandy Shores is booked through Beachwalk Vacation Rentals, the resort's rental office. Their calendar shows live availability and rates, and they handle payment, the door code, Resort Bands and the golf cart. Check availability.
Beachwalk Resort
What is a Resort Band, and do we need one?
- Yes, in season. Beachwalk's pool, splash pad, Lake Kai beach, courts and activity center are for owners and registered guests. From mid-May through September everyone four and older wears a Resort Band for the stay (about $15 per person) and each car needs a parking pass (about $5). Beachwalk Vacation Rentals arranges them with your booking and tells you where to pick them up.
Is a golf cart included?
- Yes. A four-seater golf cart comes with the house in season (roughly Memorial Day to Labor Day). It stays inside the resort: carts go as far as the Lake Shore Drive gate, then you walk the boardwalk to the beach. Licensed drivers only, and the resort's speed limit applies.
How far is the beach?
- Sheridan Beach, a public Lake Michigan beach, is about five minutes by golf cart plus a short walk over the boardwalk at Stop 7. Lake Kai, the resort's private lake with its own sandy beach, kayaks and paddle boards, is a few minutes' walk from the house.
What is there to do at the resort without leaving?
- The heated pool and kiddie pool, the splash pad, Lake Kai beach with kayaks, paddle boards and catch-and-release fishing, tennis and pickleball, basketball, beach volleyball, shuffleboard, a putting green, Cason Park playground, and the clubhouse café for ice cream. The house
What is provided?
- A full kitchen with the usual cookware and small appliances, bath towels and bed linens, a full-size washer and dryer, air conditioning, TVs in the lounge and the first-floor master, a gas grill on the deck and the fire circle out back. Bring your own beach towels, sunscreen and beach toys.
What should we pack?
- Beach towels, sunscreen, water shoes for the stony stretches of Sheridan Beach, a beach wagon if you have one (the last stretch to the sand is on foot), bug spray for the fire circle, and layers: Lake Michigan evenings cool off even in July. Groceries, pharmacies and a Walmart are a ten-minute drive.
Where is the nearest grocery store?
- Al's Supermarket, Meijer and Walmart are all about ten minutes away in Michigan City. For a quick run, the Beachwalk clubhouse café covers coffee, ice cream and snacks in season.
Is there a hospital or urgent care nearby?
- Franciscan Health Michigan City, a full hospital with an emergency room, is about ten minutes from the resort. In an emergency call 911.
Getting here
How far is Beachwalk Resort from Chicago?
- About 60 miles. By car it is roughly 1 hour 15 minutes on I-94 or I-90 to Michigan City. Without a car, take the South Shore Line from Millennium Station to 11th Street station in Michigan City (about 1 hour 45 minutes), then a ten-minute rideshare to the house.
Which airport is closest?
- South Bend (SBN) is about 45 minutes away. Chicago O'Hare and Midway are about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic.
What time zone is Michigan City in?
- Central time, the same as Chicago. New Buffalo, Three Oaks and the rest of Michigan are on Eastern time, an hour ahead, so plan Michigan dinner reservations accordingly.
